The Chief Director of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Afisah Zakariah, has received a delegation from the Ghana Science Association (GSA) as part of preparations towards the Association’s 20th Biennial Workshop scheduled for September.
She welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the programme.
Mrs Zakariah received the delegation on Thursday in Accra on behalf of the Minister, Mrs Emelia Arthur, and she underscored the role of science-based research in driving sustainable development within Ghana’s fisheries and coastal sectors, noting the importance of translating scientific findings into practical policy interventions.
Mrs Zakariah further called on research institutions to intensify studies into pressing health concerns such as cancer and kidney disease.
She stressed the need for targeted research to uncover root causes and develop effective interventions.
The GSA formally invited Mrs Emelia Arthur to serve as the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony of the workshop, which will be held under the theme “Advancing Ghana’s Blue Economy: Securing Our Shores, Feeding Our Future.”
The Association also used the engagement to highlight its ongoing educational outreach efforts, which introduced students at the junior and senior high school levels to key scientific topics, including environmental sustainability, agriculture, public health, and the coastal economy.
The 20th Biennial Workshop is anticipated to serve as a key platform for shaping policy dialogue and fostering collaboration towards a more sustainable and resilient blue economy in Ghana.
