The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has inspected an ongoing beach clean-up exercise at Chorkor aimed at improving environmental sanitation, safeguarding public health, and restoring the city’s coastline.
The initiative, led by Mayekoo in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), took place in Accra.
Speaking during the inspection on Tuesday, Mr Allotey said, “The exercise aligns with his administration’s commitment to practical sanitation measures and beach restoration”.
He noted that the AMA would focus on restoring the Chorkor beachfront not only for environmental reasons but also as part of a long-term strategy to unlock the economic potential of the coastline.
According to the Mayor, cleaner and well-managed beaches could attract tourism-related investments, including hotel developments, while creating employment opportunities for young people and stimulating the local economy.
He emphasised that beach sanitation remains a top priority despite the competing demands of his office and assured continued support from the Assembly for the clean-up initiatives across the city.
Meanwhile, the Assemblyman for the Chorkor Electoral Area and Chairman of the Ablekuma South Sub-Metro, Theophilus Isaac Quaye, highlighted the need to construct a proper access route from the roadside to the beach to support such activities.
Providing details of the project, Robert Mills Lamptey, Programmes Lead for Mayekoo, said the organisation decided to expand its operations to Chorkor after an initial assessment of the beach’s condition.
He disclosed that the current intervention includes a large-scale mechanical clean-up, to be followed by a volunteer-driven exercise. The volunteer event would attract participation from several corporate institutions, including Prudential Life Insurance, Clifton Homes, and Gripe.
Beyond the immediate clean-up, Mr Lamptey announced that Mayekoo intends to adopt the Chorkor beach for one year, to carry out maintenance exercises at least twice a month using its self-rig equipment, including a tractor and plough, to ensure sustained cleanliness and environmental preservation.
