The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has called for stronger cooperation among member states of the Commonwealth of Nations as countries confront global challenges such as climate change, economic uncertainty and technological change.
Speaking at the 2026 Commonwealth Day on Monday in Accra, he emphasized that cooperation among nations remains essential as the world faces complex problems that cannot be solved by individual countries acting alone.
Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak said the Commonwealth continues to provide a platform for countries to engage with each other and pursue shared development goals.
“With 56 nations and about 2.7 billion people, the Commonwealth shows how countries with different cultures and histories can work together for peace, development and prosperity”, he said.
He noted that since gaining independence, Ghana has remained actively engaged within the Commonwealth and continues to advocate for democratic governance, human rights, and youth development.
“Ghana remains committed to strengthening democracy, empowering young people and supporting sustainable development”, he said.
The minister said climate change continues to affect many Commonwealth countries, especially small island states and vulnerable regions.
“Climate change threatens the livelihoods of millions, and many of our economies are facing serious pressure”, he added.
Mr Mohammed-Mubarak encouraged Commonwealth nations to deepen cooperation in education, trade, health and technology.
He said the celebration of Commonwealth Day also serves as a reminder of the shared history of member states and the need to build stronger partnerships for the future.
Delivering the message on behalf of the Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Christian Rogg called for stronger cooperation among member states of the Commonwealth of Nations as countries confront global challenges ranging from climate change to conflict and economic pressure.
He noted that the Commonwealth’s voluntary partnership provides a platform for open discussion among nations and creates opportunities for cooperation that can improve the lives of people across member states.
King Charles III referred to the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2026, which will be held in Antigua and Barbuda later this year.
He said the strength of the Commonwealth lies not only in decisions taken by governments but also in the actions of citizens across member countries.
The event, which marked the 74th Commonwealth Day celebration, was held under the theme Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth brought together diplomats, government officials and representatives from Commonwealth member states.
