The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, called for stronger collaboration among ECOWAS Member States, development partners, and the private sector to mobilise resources and accelerate the delivery of railway infrastructure across the sub-region
Speaking at the EU-Regional Business Forum on Transport and Strategic Corridors in Abidjan, he noted the importance of modern rail systems in reducing transport costs, improving trade, and promoting sustainable mobility across West Africa.
Mr Nikpe reiterated Ghana’s commitment to railway development as a key driver of economic growth and regional integration.
He acknowledged the challenges facing the sector, including old infrastructure, funding constraints, and limited network coverage, but emphasised that Africa has significant opportunities to transform its railway industry through strategic investments and partnerships.
The Minister indicated that Ghana’s participation in the Trans-ECOWAS Railway project would enhance connectivity with neighbouring countries and boost regional trade.
He added that Ghana would be implementing its Railway Master Plan, which includes the development of a standard-gauge network linking key economic zones to the ports of Tema and Takoradi.
