Ghana And Mali Sign MOU to Increase Transit Trade

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) and the Mali Shippers’ Council have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen transit trade between Ghana and Mali.

The agreement focuses on easing the movement of goods between the two countries, improving information sharing, and supporting the development of infrastructure needed to make transit trade more efficient.

The MoU was signed on Tuesday in Bamako, Mali, where the Chief Executive Officer of the GSA, Ransford Gyampo, described the partnership as a timely step toward improving trade facilitation.

He said the deal would help make cross-border trade more efficient, safer, and more predictable, while also strengthening protections for shippers and transport operators who rely on the corridor.

The Head of the Mali Shippers’ Council, Kissima dit Bakissima Sylla, stressed the need for continued cooperation and active engagement among stakeholders to ensure the agreement delivers real results.

He noted that a more reliable transit system would benefit businesses in both countries and support wider regional trade and economic growth.

Mr Sylla also praised the GSA for its efforts to improve transit trade conditions, particularly for Malian businesses that depend on Ghana’s trade routes.

Highlighting Ghana’s strategic position as a gateway to the sea, he reaffirmed Mali’s preference for the Ghanaian corridor.

He called on authorities to address persistent challenges along the route, including high shipping charges, multiple checkpoints, and reported harassment by some uniformed personnel.
