Sports Ministry Pledges to Honour Retired Footballers

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Mr Kofi Adams, has announced plans to organise annual commemorative events that honour the contributions of past footballers.

He stated ongoing initiatives aimed to provide post-retirement opportunities, health support, and the establishment of a dedicated Sports Fund intended not only for active sports development but also for the welfare of retired players.

He disclosed this on Wednesday when representatives of the Retired Footballers Association of Ghana paid a courtesy call on him in Accra.

He noted that their efforts are fundamental to Ghana’s continued prominence in African football.

“The strength of a family is how well it is connected to the old,” he said.

He acknowledged the vital role played by footballers in shaping Ghana’s sporting legacy.

He expressed appreciation for the association’s efforts and assured them of the government’s commitment to improving welfare programs for retired athletes.

He urged the association to work closely with the Ministry to develop sustainable strategies that honour the past while inspiring future generations.

On his part, the Association’s President, Mr James Kuuku Dadzie, emphasised the importance of fostering a strong partnership between the government and retired footballers to ensure they receive the support and recognition they deserve.

He highlighted Ghana’s glorious past in football, mentioning the triumphs in the African Cup of Nations in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982, solidifying Ghana’s reputation as a football powerhouse in Africa.

The Retired Footballers Association of Ghana expressed gratitude for the warm reception and looked forward to a fruitful partnership with the government.

Members of the delegation included Mr James Kuuku Dadzie, Mr Willie Kluste, Rev. Osei Kofi, Rev. Kofi Dare, Mr Mohammed Polo, Mr Abdul Razak, and Mr George Alhassan.

The visit marked a significant step toward ensuring that Ghana’s football legends are celebrated and supported, safeguarding their legacy for generations to come.
