In a decisive and widely endorsed outcome, the Assembly Member for the New Nsuta “Auntie Bee” Electoral Area, David Mensah Odoom, has been elected Presiding Member of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly.
He secured an overwhelming 24 votes out of the 27 valid votes cast in a smooth and transparent election process. He contested the position alongside the Assembly Member for the Anyinam Electoral Area, Solomon Amoako Acheampong, who had three votes.
The Obuasi Municipal Assembly comprises 19 elected Assembly Members, nine Government Appointees, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), and the Member of Parliament, who does not have voting rights in the election of the Presiding Member. In total, the Assembly has 30 members; however, two members were absent and did not participate in the election.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Odoom expressed profound gratitude to his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him. He acknowledged the support and guidance of the Municipal Chief Executive, Municipal Coordinating Director, outgoing Presiding Member, and the electorate of New Nsuta “Auntie Bee” for their unwavering encouragement throughout his journey.
He called for unity among members, urging them to work collectively to advance the development agenda of the Municipality. “I have come to serve and not to be served,” he emphasised, reiterating his commitment to selfless leadership and inclusive governance.
As part of his immediate priorities, Mr Odoom indicated plans to renovate the Assembly Hall to create a more conducive environment for deliberations. He also proposed the display of portraits of past Presiding Members on the walls of the Assembly Hall to honour their service and preserve the institutional memory of the Assembly.
Addressing the Assembly, the Municipal Chief Executive, Madam Faustilove Appiah Kannin, congratulated the newly elected Presiding Member and encouraged all Assembly Members to continue contributing their quota toward the development of the Municipality. She underscored that development was a shared responsibility, noting that while Assembly Members have their roles to play, she and the management team equally remain committed to delivering on their mandate.
She further called for collaboration, unity, and dedication in addressing the pressing needs of the Municipality.
The election was conducted by officials of the Electoral Commission, led by the Municipal Electoral Officer, Mr Ebenezer Osei Tutu, who also served as the Returning Officer. At the close of polls, Mr Osei Tutu officially declared David Mensah Odoom duly elected as Presiding Member of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly.
Following his declaration, Mr Odoom was sworn into office by His Worship Kofi Wusu Sekyere, marking the formal commencement of his tenure as Presiding Member.
His election signals a renewed commitment to unity, progress, and effective local governance within the Obuasi Municipality.
