Sport Minister Calls for Free Movement Across Africa to Drive Sports Development

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, has called for easier movement across African countries to support sports development.

He made the appeal at the Basketball Africa League Investor Summit held in Kigali, Rwanda

He noted that athletes, coaches, and investors need fewer travel restrictions to grow the sector.

According to him, Africa should work towards freer travel between countries to allow sports talent and expertise to circulate more easily.

He said that mobility challenges continue to limit the growth of regional competitions and athlete exposure.

Mr Adams stated that Ghana’s youth sports systems under President John Dramani Mahama, programmes such as the Grassroots Sports Secretariat and the School Sports Organisation as efforts to develop talent from an early stage.

He called for stronger Public-Private Partnership arrangements to attract private investment into sports infrastructure and development programmes.

He said clear structures would help investors better understand entry points into the sector.

He added that Africa should position itself not only as a market for global sports but also as a source of talent and innovation, with stronger pathways for athletes to develop and succeed on the continent.

The summit was attended by Paul Kagame, ministers from several countries, NBA officials, and current and former basketball players.

The summit brought together stakeholders from across the continent and beyond, including representatives from the sports, business, and development sectors. It focused on how sports can support economic activity and youth development.
