NCA Director-General Pushes for Rural Connectivity in Future Spectrum Auctions

The Director-General of the National Communications Authority, Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, has called for future spectrum auction frameworks in Ghana to include strict rural connectivity obligations to ensure telecommunications services reach underserved communities across the country.

Speaking on Wednesday at the 15th anniversary celebration of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and a high-level workshop on spectrum auction strategy in Accra, Rev. Ing. Fianko stressed that operators must be mandated to extend services beyond major urban centres.

According to him, spectrum allocation policies should not only focus on commercial value but also support inclusive digital development by ensuring rural communities benefit from improved connectivity and digital access.

He emphasised that future spectrum allocations must incorporate infrastructure sharing, energy resilience, and cybersecurity readiness as part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s telecommunications ecosystem.

Rev. Ing. Fianko noted the importance of candid stakeholder engagement in shaping effective regulatory frameworks capable of responding to the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Drawing on international experience, he noted that Ghana continues to distinguish itself through regulatory clarity and strong collaboration among stakeholders within the telecommunications sector.

The Director-General urged industry players, government institutions, and regulators to sustain cooperation to drive innovation, strengthen digital infrastructure, and support the long-term growth of the sector.
