Residents of the Northern Region can collect free tree seedlings from Forestry Commission offices for the 2026 Tree for Life Initiative, with a mass planting event set for Friday, June 5, in Tamale.
The Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Ali Adolf John, the Northern Regional Coordinating Council(NRCC), and Forestry Commission will hold this regional tree-planting exercise as part of the Government of Ghana’s 2026 Tree for Life Initiative.
The Regional Minister has called on residents to plant at least one tree at their homes, schools, farms, workplaces, and in their communities. Traditional leaders, religious groups, schools, youth groups, and NGOs are also being urged to join the exercise.
The Regional Minister said protecting the environment is everyone’s duty, adding that “today’s actions will help secure a healthier environment for future generations”.
The Tree for Life Initiative promotes environmental protection and climate action, restore degraded land, increases forest cover, and builds a culture of environmental care among Ghanaians.
The NRCC and Forestry Commission said tree planting helps fight climate change, prevent soil erosion, clean the air, protect water sources, and support wildlife, and called on citizens to not only plant trees but also care for them so they survive.
