Ministry of Communication Commences Seventh Open Day Event to Empower Young Women in Tech

The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has commenced its seventh Open Day Event at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE).

This initiative aims to provide the top 100 young ladies from the Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions who distinguished themselves during recent celebrations with hands-on experience in the tech environment.

Speaking on behalf of the sector minister on Monday, the Deputy Minister, Mr. Mohammed Adam Sukparu, described the event as a demonstration of the Ministry’s commitment to investing in the potential of girls, dismantling systemic barriers, and promoting a more inclusive and resilient digital economy.

“We are not merely celebrating another event; we are charting a path towards a Ghana where every girl, regardless of geography or background, has the tools and opportunities to thrive in the digital age,” he stated.

Mr. Sukparu highlighted the Girls-In-ICT initiative as one of the Ministry’s most transformative programs and a cornerstone of inclusive digital development. He referred to the climax of the initiative in the Volta Region, where 1,000 girls were empowered with the skills and confidence to meaningfully participate in the tech ecosystem.

“This initiative is not just about training numbers; it is about transformation and nurturing a generation of digitally fluent young women who can become developers, cybersecurity experts, AI engineers, data scientists, innovators, and changemakers,” he noted.

He highlighted that the Open Day Ceremony was pivotal to this transformation, stating, “It is more than a ceremonial activity. It is a living classroom, a space of discovery where girls interact directly with STEM professionals, explore emerging technologies, and develop a tangible sense of what a future in ICT could look like. This early exposure is critical because we cannot be what we cannot see.”

The Deputy Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to empowering girls, bridging the digital divide, and ensuring that no one is left behind.

“Let us continue this important work as policymakers, educators, industry leaders, and citizens to close the digital gender gap and usher in a Ghana where every girl has the opportunity to lead, innovate, and thrive,” he urged.

He expressed gratitude to American Tower Corporation (ATC) for its generous sole sponsorship and partnership, which have been instrumental in sustaining this initiative. He also acknowledged the support of MTN, AT, Telecel, the National Communications Authority (NCA), the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), the Kofi Annan ICT Centre of Excellence (GI-KACE), Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL), and the Cybersecurity Authority (CSA). He encouraged the girls to pursue careers in ICT.
