Gov’t To Allocate More Minerals Fund Cash for Roads in Mining Areas

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that the government will provide additional funding from the Minerals Development Fund to improve road infrastructure in mining communities across the region.

“In mining areas, the government has decided to make additional allocations under the Minerals Fund specifically to cater for roads in mining communities, which is in addition to 10km of roads allocated to each MMDA,” the minister said.

Dr Amoakohene announced this during a working visit to Obuasi West and Obuasi East in the company of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council Chief Director, Mr Michael Owusu Amoako Esq, to inspect ongoing government and District Assemblies Common Fund projects.

The Regional Minister assured residents that the government is taking deliberate steps to fix poor roads in mining areas, adding that the Obuasi enclave is critical to the government and stressed the need for regular field visits to monitor projects.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to decentralising development, adding that 80% of the District Assemblies Common Fund has been disbursed to MMDAs with clear spending guidelines.

He added that funds have also been earmarked for market development to support the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.

The visit forms part of efforts to promote accountability and speed up development in the Ashanti Region.
