The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has initiated a daily fine of GHC 10,000 against MultiChoice Ghana (DSTV), effective August 14, 2025, for failing to submit essential pricing data as mandated under the Electronic Communications Act (ECA).

During a meeting with the DSTV team in Accra, the Sector Minister, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, expressed concern over the company’s lack of compliance.

He noted that the requested data, which includes a breakdown of bouquet prices, tax components, and comparisons with pricing in at least six other African nations, was intended to facilitate discussions aimed at reducing subscription fees for Ghanaian customers.

Mr. George stated that despite granting an extension until August 11, 2025, DSTV did not meet the deadline, prompting the government to take action. He emphasised, “The law is clear, and we will enforce it. If necessary, we can freeze accounts to protect consumer interests.”

The Ministry had previously warned that if no price reduction occurs by September 6, 2025, DSTV’s operating license could be suspended due to their refusal to commit to lowering fees. With the requested information still not provided, the Minister stressed the importance of having the necessary data to engage meaningfully with DSTV on pricing issues.

Mr. George reassured the public that once the data was submitted, a thorough review would be conducted.

“If taxes are the sole reason for high prices, I will advocate for a tax review. If not, we expect DSTV to comply with our directive to make subscriptions more affordable,” he added.
