Government to establish a fund to tackle NCDs and support Free Primary Health Care programme- Health Minister

The Minister for Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that government is set to establish a dedicated fund to tackle Non Communicable Diseases(NCDs) and support the Free Primary Health Care programme to reinforce community-level health systems.

According to him, about 45 percent of mortalities in Ghana are linked to NCDs hence Ghana’s commitment to achieving health independence while strengthening global partnerships.

He made these revalations when he hosted a delegation from the Alliance for Health Policy and the Institute Research Board to discuss a U.S.-led initiative on bilateral cooperation in pathogen sharing and health sovereignty.

Mr. Akandoh said government’s strategy to address health workforce migration is by optimizing recruitment to meet national needs while pursuing structured international collaborations. Noting that 14 countries have already signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Ghana, reflecting a balanced approach to health sovereignty and cooperation.

According to the Minister, Ghana has reached a verbal agreement with an international partner to support policy development for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the health sector, alongside the retooling of primary health facilities

Mr. Akandoh reassured that the Ministry’s top priority remains with the well-being of Ghanaians, noting that Ghana seeks to be a model of health sovereignty and equitable healthcare delivery across the continent.

Former Regional Director for World Health Organization (WHO) in Africa, Madam Matshidiso Moeti, commended the government’s forward-looking health initiatives under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.

She lauded Ghana’s progress in health financing through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and encouraged the country to extend its leadership in health innovation to other African nations.
