Ghana Urges Immediate Halt to Hostilities in Sudan Amid Humanitarian Crisis

The Government of Ghana has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Sudan, where ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have led to a humanitarian disaster.

In a release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday in Accra, it stated that the continued conflict has left millions destitute and facing starvation, undermining regional security and threatening the progress made toward a peaceful transition in the country.

It said, Ghana stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and reiterates its unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and democratic governance across the African continent.

“Ghana further stresses that there is no military solution to this crisis, and therefore calls for an immediate, complete and unconditional halt to all military operations nationwide, the immediate establishment of safe corridors for the rapid and unrestricted delivery of life-saving humanitarian aid to all affected regions,” it said.

It called for strict observance of International Humanitarian Law, ensuring safe passage and protection for all citizens, aid workers, and medical personnel, and urged the parties to return to the negotiating table to establish a path toward a civilian-led transitional government.

“For regional and international actors to cease any support that fuels the conflict and to fully comply with the UN arms embargo on Darfur,” it added.

The statement said that the Government was committed to supporting all efforts to resolve the conflict and promote long-term stability in Sudan.

It also urged regional and international actors, including the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), to intensify diplomatic efforts and mediation to facilitate a peaceful resolution.
