Communications Minister calls for better telecom services at MTN@30 launch

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has called on MTN Ghana to align its dominant position in the telecommunications sector with improved customer experience, fair pricing, and wider network accessibility.

Speaking on Thursday at the launch of MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary celebrations in Accra, the Minister acknowledged the company’s significant contribution to Ghana’s digital and telecommunications landscape over the past three decades but stressed that market leadership must come with greater responsibility to consumers.

According to Mr. George, while MTN Ghana has played a key role in expanding connectivity and driving digital inclusion, many Ghanaians still expect better service delivery and stronger network reliability.

He urged the telecommunications giant to invest more in strengthening network infrastructure and improving service quality across the country, particularly in underserved and rural communities.

The Minister also called for fair and affordable pricing of telecom services to ensure that digital access remains inclusive and beneficial to all citizens.

Mr. George noted that as Ghana accelerates its digital transformation agenda, telecommunications companies must place consumers at the centre of their operations while supporting government efforts to expand digital opportunities.

He further commended MTN Ghana for its long-standing presence in the country and its contribution to job creation, innovation, and economic growth.

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Mr. Stephen Blewett, described the anniversary as a moment of reflection on a journey defined by connection, progress, and national impact.

‎He emphasized that MTN’s story goes beyond infrastructure, focusing instead on the lives transformed through connectivity.

‎Mr. Blewett reaffirmed the company’s commitment to meeting the expectations set by government and customers, acknowledging the Minister’s call for higher performance standards.

‎He announced a series of customer-focused activities and promotions as part of the anniversary celebrations, describing them as “bigger and better” initiatives to reward loyalty and deepen engagement.
