Communication Minister Urges Full Compliance with Data Protection Act

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr Samuel Nartey George, has called on all institutions that collect or process personal data to comply fully with the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).

Speaking at the Data Protection Conference in Accra on Thursday, the Minister encouraged organisations yet to register with the Data Protection Commission to do so without delay.

He described compliance as both a legal obligation and a moral responsibility, stressing that leadership in data governance must be proactive rather than reactive.

Mr George emphasised that personal data protection was fundamental to sustaining Ghana’s digital transformation, and the bedrock upon which the country’s digital economy must be built.

He cautioned that rapid digital growth without robust governance frameworks exposes systems to vulnerabilities that can erode public confidence and slow innovation.

The Minister also disclosed ongoing reforms to strengthen Ghana’s legislative and institutional framework for data protection, aligning national systems with global considerations on digital sovereignty and resilience.

He urged stakeholders to work together to build a digital society grounded in trust and accountability, reinforcing the importance of compliance with Act 843 as Ghana advances its digital economy.

The Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission, Dr Arnold Kavaarpuo, urged stakeholders to build a digital society grounded in trust and accountability.
