The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, has inaugurated the Governing Board for the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), charging them to lead a comprehensive restructuring of the agency.
The Board, appointed by President Mahama under the NITA Act 2008 (Act 771), is expected to oversee NITA’s transition into a fully functional and independent ICT regulator, distinct from its current dual role as both infrastructure operator and regulator.
During the swearing-in ceremony, the Minister emphasised the Board’s central role in reshaping the future of ICT governance in Ghana.
“Seventeen years on, NITA remains a sleeping giant. Your task is to wake it up. We are splitting NITA into two: a regulatory agency and a commercially run infrastructure company. This Board will oversee both,” he stated.
Mr. George outlined plans to revise the legal framework establishing NITA, with a draft bill already 80% complete and expected to be presented to Parliament later this year.
The Board, led by Ms. Estelle Akofio-Sowah, includes Ing. Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, Ms. Angela Kyerematen-Jimoh, Mr. Alain Gbeasor, Mr. Kwasi Danso Amoah, Prof. Akumey-Affizie, Mr. Kwasi Nkansah Dwir from the National Security Council, Ms. Christine Yita, and Mr. Gabriel Yita.
According to the Minister, two additional members are expected to join the Board shortly, including a representative from the Ministry.
Ms. Estelle Akofio-Sowah pledged to lead with integrity and purpose. “We’ve all, at some point, asked why NITA isn’t in a better place. Now we are in a position to make it better. I believe in teamwork and rolling up my sleeves to deliver results,” she affirmed.
