The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has proposed establishing mobile phone assembly and manufacturing plants in Ghana to position the country as a production and export hub for the West African sub-region.
He made the proposal on Thursday, in Accra, during a courtesy call by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ghana, Cong Song.
The meeting focused on deepening Ghana–China relations, particularly in advancing digital transformation and innovation-driven development.
Mr. George reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with Chinese technology firms, highlighting the role of companies such as Huawei in supporting the country’s digital agenda.
He noted that collaboration with industry leaders is essential to accelerating Ghana’s technological growth and competitiveness.
According to the Minister, the government has created an enabling environment to attract foreign direct investment, especially in local manufacturing, as part of broader efforts to build a resilient digital economy.
He further expressed Ghana’s readiness to play an active role in Global South–South cooperation, leveraging shared experiences to promote inclusive and sustainable digital infrastructure development.
Mr. George also welcomed China’s hosting of the upcoming World Radiocommunication Conference, describing it as a critical platform for global collaboration on spectrum management and emerging technologies.
Discussions during the meeting also covered key priority areas, including the expansion of the Rural Telephony Project to promote connectivity in underserved communities, the rollout of 5G infrastructure, and the upgrade of the National Data Center to meet increasing data demands.
Ambassador Cong Song commended the Minister for his leadership in advancing Ghana’s digital transformation agenda and strengthening bilateral ties.
He reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Ghana across critical sectors, particularly in emerging technologies, for mutual benefit.
