The Deputy Minister for Defence, Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi, has reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities and deepening strategic cooperation with the United Kingdom.
He said this during a courtesy call from a delegation from the United Kingdom’s Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) Global.
The delegation, led by Lieutenant General Sir George Norton (Rtd), is in the country as part of their annual strategic study tour, which aims to analyse Ghana’s defence architecture, regional security dynamics, and socio-political landscape.
Speaking during a briefing session, Mr Brogya Genfi highlighted the longstanding defence partnership between Ghana and the United Kingdom, describing the relationship as vital in promoting peace, security, and military cooperation within the sub-region.
He also provided the delegation with an overview of the Ministry of Defence’s mandate and outlined ongoing government efforts to modernise the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to ensure they remain resilient, professional, and well-equipped to respond effectively to emerging security threats.
According to the Deputy Minister, growing instability within the Sahel region, coupled with concerns over border security and escalating cyber threats, continues to pose significant challenges to countries within West Africa.
He noted that the government has therefore adopted proactive measures and strategic interventions to prevent the spillover of insecurity into Ghana while strengthening the country’s internal security systems.
Mr Brogya Genfi further stressed the importance of collaboration among international partners in addressing evolving security threats and safeguarding stability across the region.
