Ghana Pushes Continental Digital Integration with Malawi Collaboration

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has revealed plans to extend Ghana’s digital innovation model across Africa, beginning with Malawi.

The country has formally invited Ghana to replicate its successes in fintech, e-government, and other technology sectors.

The invitation was extended by Malawi’s Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Dr Shadric Namalomba, during a meeting with the Minister at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Spain.

According to Mr George, the request reflects growing recognition of Ghana’s reputation as a continental leader in digital innovation.

He pointed to his recent state visit to Zambia with President Mahama, where 12 Ghanaian technology and fintech firms secured US$60 million worth of business deals in just three days. Building on that success, the Minister said Malawi now wants Ghanaian firms to assist in rolling out solutions in areas such as digital ID systems, rural connectivity, agritech, edutech, healthtech, and AI-enabled platforms.

Beyond bilateral cooperation, Mr George emphasised a broader vision of regulatory harmonisation across Africa. He explained that Ghana has already published new industry legislative drafts to serve as benchmarks for other countries, to enable “license passporting”, a mechanism that would allow financial and technology firms licensed in one country to operate seamlessly across the continent.

“For me, if we move Ghanaian businesses into the continent, that is the only way we can achieve Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s dream of Ghana’s independence being linked to the total liberation of the African continent,” he stated.

The Minister confirmed that he will soon lead a delegation of 15 to 20 Ghanaian technology businesses to Malawi to assist with national ID solutions, fintech platforms, and e-government portals, reinforcing Ghana’s role as a driver of Africa’s digital transformation.
