The Vice President of the Republic, H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has commissioned a new cohort of officer cadets into the Ghana Prisons Service, underscoring the Government’s renewed commitment to strengthening the institution and improving inmate welfare.
The ceremony, held on Tuesday, in Accra, for Officer Cadet Course Intake 32, was attended by the Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, and the Director-General Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, who joined the Vice President in reviewing the parade and congratulating the graduating officers.
Speaking at the graduation, the Vice President emphasized the Government’s commitment to providing the Service with the personnel, tools, and resources needed to fulfill its constitutional mandate effectively.
She pointed to recent policy interventions, including the increase in daily feeding allocation for inmates from GHC 1.80 to GHC 5.00, as evidence of the government’s commitment to humane treatment within correctional facilities.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also announced the launch of the Think 360 Degrees Prisons Initiative, a comprehensive programme designed to integrate humanitarian and developmental approaches to prison management.
The initiative prioritises officer and inmate welfare, agricultural mechanisation, and expand vocational training opportunities.
According to her, the new initiative is expected to support sustainable job creation, enhance revenue generation, and strengthen rehabilitation processes to ensure inmates are adequately reintegrated into society upon release.
The Vice President charged the new cadets to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism, and officially declared them commissioned into the senior corps of the Ghana Prisons Service.
