The Vice President of Ghana, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has commissioned 100 newly acquired Isuzu buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen public transportation and improve mobility across the country.
Speaking during the programme in Accra, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated the role of efficient public transportation in driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens.
She explained that the acquisition of the buses forms part of a broader government strategy to ease the financial and physical challenges faced by daily commuters, particularly those travelling on underserved rural-urban routes.
According to the Vice President, the intervention would improve accessibility while restoring public confidence in the state-owned transport system.
“The arrival of this fleet is designed to reduce the burden on commuters and ensure that more Ghanaians have access to safe, affordable, and dependable transportation services,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the new buses would help reduce reliance on unsafe, unreliable, and often expensive transport alternatives, while extending Metro Mass services to additional communities across the country.
She added that the expansion of the fleet would significantly increase passenger capacity, ease congestion on existing routes, and provide commuters with a more comfortable and dignified travel experience.
The Vice President highlighted the fuel efficiency of the buses, describing them as modern vehicles equipped with enhanced safety and comfort features.
“The quality of public transportation must reflect the dignity of the people it serves. These buses represent our commitment to providing safer, more efficient, and more comfortable travel options for Ghanaians,” she stated.
The Minister for Transport, Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, described the commissioning as a major milestone in the government’s efforts to modernise the transport sector and improve connectivity across the country.
He said the additional buses would strengthen Metro Mass Transit’s operations and make it easier for workers, traders, students, and residents in various communities to travel safely and efficiently.
According to Mr Nikpe, improved public transportation remains essential to national development, as it facilitates economic activity, enhances access to opportunities, and promotes social inclusion.
