Transport Minister Calls for Clarity and Urgency in Driving Sector Transformation

The Minister for Transport, Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has urged stakeholders in the transport sector to lead with clarity and urgency, stressing that the sector is central to economic transformation.

Opening the 2026 Transport Sector Strategic Review Retreat of the Ministry of Transport and its Agencies in Ho, Mr Nikpe noted that no serious economy can aspire to industrial growth, regional integration, or sustained productivity without a transport system that is safe, efficient, integrated, inclusive, reliable, and responsive to user needs.

The Minister outlined priority projects, including the establishment of a national airline, expansion of airport infrastructure, improvements in maritime operations, and advancement of rail development.

He mentioned ongoing airport upgrades and the introduction of digital travel support systems, dredging works at ports to improve efficiency, and efforts to expand coastal water transport services.

He further identified the operationalisation of the Tema-Mpakadan railway line and the development of sections of the Western Rail Line as key priorities.

Mr Nikpe urged agency heads to deliver projects within approved timelines and produce measurable outcomes, warning that agencies would be held accountable for implementation. “Agencies must provide clear explanations for setbacks and outline measures being taken to address them,” he cautioned.

He affirmed his commitment to improving coordination, accelerating infrastructure delivery, strengthening regulations, promoting safety, expanding digital services, and ensuring alignment with government priorities, particularly the 24-hour economy policy and the resetting agenda.

The retreat, he explained, was designed to facilitate collaboration among agencies, share insights, and assess whether the sector is meeting its objectives and positioning itself to support Ghana’s future development.
