The Volta Region has marked World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 with a sanitary pad distribution exercise for vulnerable schools and institutions, as the government renewed its pledge to end period poverty.
The event was held at St. Catherine Senior High School in Sogakope. Volta Regional Minister Mr James Gunu joined South Tongu DCE Mrs Victoria Dzeklo, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, heads of institutions, queen mothers, and other dignitaries for the celebration.
The programme was organised on behalf of Vice President Her Excellency Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman. Sanitary pads were distributed to schools and institutions across the Volta Region to promote menstrual hygiene and reduce period poverty among girls.
Speaking at the event, Mr James Gunu said the government is committed to ensuring that no girl misses school because she cannot access sanitary products.
He called on stakeholders to continue supporting girl child education and health initiatives.
The 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration forms part of wider efforts to improve menstrual health and keep girls in school across the region.
