US Delegation Pays Courtesy Call on Defence Ministry to Strengthen Maritime Security

The Deputy Minister for Defence, Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi, has held high-level discussions with the United States Naval Commander, Admiral George Wikoff, and the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson, with a strong focus on safeguarding Ghana’s territorial waters amid rising maritime crime.

The engagement underscored the growing defence and security partnership between Ghana and the United States, particularly in addressing emerging threats in the maritime domain.

During the meeting, Mr Genfi emphasised the urgent need to enhance surveillance capabilities and improve monitoring systems to ensure more effective protection of Ghana’s waters.

He called for expanded joint military exercises and targeted training programmes to strengthen the operational capacity of the Ghana Navy to respond to maritime security challenges.

Admiral Wikoff reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Ghana’s security architecture, noting that both countries share a common resolve to promote regional stability and combat terrorism.

He stressed that ongoing cooperation would prioritise strategic investment and capacity building to better equip security personnel to handle both current and future threats.
