President John Dramani Mahama says he is optimistic about further deepening bilateral and trade relations between Ghana and China during his tenure.
He said this when he held bilateral discussions with President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China.
President Mahama said he is happy to work towards bringing the needed progress not only to Ghana but also to Africa as a whole.
He recounted the cordial relations between the two countries which dates back to the era of Ghana’s First President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and General Mao Zedong and Prime Minister Zhou Enlai.
The President said the relations have since been elevated to a strategic partnership.
He acknowledged the tremendous efforts of President Xi in championing issues of women. President Mahama noted that these efforts must help rapid implementation of the Beijing Declaration in 1995 and the Platform for Action.
The President expressed concern that global multilateralism is giving way to unilateralism by many countries.
He said for those countries that believe in multilateralism it is time to show solidarity with each other.
President Mahama expressed gratitude to President Xi for inviting him to participate in the Global Leadership Meeting on Women in Beijing.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Chinese President for sending a high-powered delegation to his inauguration on January 7 this year.
