President Mahama Begins State Visit to Belarus

President John Dramani Mahama begins a State Visit to the Republic of Belarus today, Friday, at the invitation of President Aleksandr Grigorievich Lukashenko.

According to a press statement issued by the Presidency on Friday, signed by Spokesperson to the President Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the visit aims to strengthen diplomatic ties between Ghana and Belarus and explore new areas of economic, agricultural and technical cooperation.

On arrival in Minsk, the President will lay a wreath at the Victory Monument in honour of Soviet Army soldiers and Belarusian partisans who fought during World War II.

The visit includes a high-level meeting between the two Heads of State, with President Mahama and President Lukashenko holding private bilateral talks to be followed by an expanded diplomatic session with ministers and senior officials from both countries.

The discussions will focus on strategic partnerships in agriculture, education and commerce.

President Mahama will also travel to Brest, one of Belarus’ most historic western cities, where he will tour one of the region’s largest processors of milk, cheese and baby products.

The Presidency said the visit is expected to open doors for knowledge sharing and potential partnerships in agro-processing, in line with the President’s industrialisation and food security agenda.

While in Brest, President Mahama will visit the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex to pay respects at the site of the 1941 Soviet defence against Nazi forces.

The itinerary also includes a visit to the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Europe’s last remaining primaeval forests.

At least four bilateral agreements are expected to be signed during the visit, aimed at fostering mutual growth and institutional collaboration between Ghana and Belarus.

President Mahama is expected to return to Accra on Tuesday, 9 June 2026.
