President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod the dualisation of the 73.6-kilometre Cape Coast–Takoradi road, a section of the National Route 1 and the Trans–West African Highway.
The project is scheduled for completion within two years and falls under the government’s Big Push roads initiative. The upgraded route will include nine interchanges, ten bridges, fifteen footbridges, and twenty kilometres of service roads, along with rest stops and axle load stations.
Construction will be carried out in three sections:
Lot 1: Cape Coast to Kissi
Lot 2: Kissi to Daboase
Lot 3: Daboase to Takoradi Airport Roundabout
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony in Assorko Essaman on Tuesday, October 21, President Mahama pointed to the road’s current state. “This national route has deteriorated, leading to many accidents and loss of life,” he stated.
The President said the dualisation would improve safety for travelers and support trade along the western corridor. “This project is about connecting communities and creating opportunities for commerce across our region,” he said.
The ceremony followed the President’s visit to the Western Regional Hospital at Apemenyim.
