Foreign Affairs Minister Urges Global Africans to Unite for Reparative Justice

The Minister for Foreign affairs, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called on participants of the Diaspora Summit 2025 and international community to work together to advance reparative justice for Africans and people of African descent

Mr. Ablakwa made this call at the opening of the Global Africa Summit on Friday in Accra.

Speaking on the theme: Resetting Ghana: The diaspora as the 17th region, he described the gathering as more than just a homecoming; it is a reconnection of destinies shaped by a shared history and resilience.

The Minister noted the significance of the diaspora, referring to it as Ghana’s “17th region,” emphasizing the nation’s commitment to solidarity and support for its global community.

“This commitment is reflected in Ghana’s humanitarian initiatives, which have extended assistance to various countries, including Palestine, Sudan, Cuba, and Jamaica”, he added.

He addressed the historical context of the summit by recalling the 80th anniversary of the influential seminar in Manchester that was crucial in initiating the anti-colonial movement.

Mr.Ablakwa emphasized the importance of seizing this moment to move beyond rhetoric and focus on coordinated action, calling for justice for historical grievances.

According to the Minister, the summit also reflects Ghana’s dedication to fostering relationships with the diaspora, including the provision of free visas for participants.

He expressed hope that the summit would mark a turning point in the fight for reparative justice, urging participants to honor their ancestors by ensuring that their struggles are recognized and remembered.

The Minister again called on participants to collaborate on actionable strategies that prioritize the healing and progress of not just Africa, but the entire global African family.

The African Union High Representative for “Silencing the Guns”, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas urged participants to approach discussions of the summit with ambition and purpose.

He said the outcomes of this summit are expected to strengthen African-diaspora ties and contribute meaningfully to advancing reparative justice.
