Our Security Situation Is Better Now – North East Regional Minister

The North East Regional Minister, Mr Ibrahim Tia, has stated that the security situation in the region has improved due to the intensive day and night patrols by the police and the cooperation from major stakeholders.

Mr Tia described security as the foundation upon which peace, development and prosperity thrive, noting that a safe and secure region will attract investments, support social activities and promote community cohesion.

The minister made these remarks in Nalerigu during the First Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session of the North East Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), which was postponed to this year due to the security situation in the region.

He said this informed his decision to hold several engagements with major stakeholders in the region to assess the security situation immediately he assumed office.

The minister, however, admitted that the region was faced with certain security threats that ought to be dealt with, identifying these threats as tribal and chieftaincy conflicts, land disputes, youth unemployment, highway robbery and ignorance among the majority of citizens.

“It is revealing to know that REGSEC is keenly monitoring these situations to promptly avert any conduct or activity that may disturb the peace within the region,” he assured them.

Mr Tia said the first time in the history of our country, the government has decentralised processes for recruitment into the security agencies as a means of balancing regional, ethnic and cultural representation in our security services.
