The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will present his mediation report on the Bawku conflict to President John Dramani Mahama on December 16 at the Presidency.
The executive committee of the House of Chiefs, and religious leaders will be invited to receive the report together.
President John Dramani Mahama revealed this when the National Peace Council paid a courtesy call on him on Wednesday at the Presidency.
“Happily, Otumfuo has signaled to me that on the 16th he would come here to the presidency. I will invite you to the National Peace Council. I invite the executive committee of the House of Chiefs and then other recognized bodies, religious leaders. And we will receive the mediation report together,” the President stated.
President Mahama said government has been managing the crisis, including sporadic killings, while waiting for the outcome of the mediation process.
He expressed appreciation to the Asantehene for his role, explaining that the previous government had asked Otumfuo to mediate before he took office.
“We came into office and the previous government informed me that they had asked Otumfuo to mediate. And so when I met him, he confirmed that, yes, he had been asked to mediate in the conflict. And so we said, OK, we’ll give opportunity for that mediation to take place,” he explained.
The President said once the report is received, government will determine what actions need to be taken to implement the findings.
“Consequently, whatever actions need to be taken to implement the reports, we would all know exactly what we’re going to do. And so we have to be prepared,” he added.
The Bawku conflict has been a sensitive security issue for the country, particularly given its location near border areas where violent extremism has been reported in neighboring Sahel countries.
