The committee reviewing Ghana’s 1992 Constitution will present its final report to President John Dramani Mahama on December 22, the President has announced.
He said the committee has already briefed him two weeks ago on some of its findings but he was “sworn to silence” until the official presentation.
The president disclosed this when the National Peace Council paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency on Wednesday.
“They met me two weeks ago and gave me a presentation of some of the findings they were going to make. Yeah, quite interesting. I was sworn to silence. And they intend to present the final reports on the 22nd of December,” the President stated.
He said once the final report is presented, government will make it known to the rest of the nation.
The constitutional review exercise formed a major part of the 2024 campaign, with both major political parties agreeing the 1992 Constitution has served the country well but needs examination.
“Both parties agreed that the 1992 constitution has served us well, but the time has come for us to take a look at it again. And so we all pledged that if we won, we would set up constitutional review committees,” he explained.
The President said he provided the committee with the Fiadjoe Committee report and white paper, as well as reports commissioned by the previous administration.
The 1992 Constitution has been Ghana’s governing document for over three decades, establishing the Fourth Republic and its democratic structures.
