The National Rental Assistance Scheme has facilitated rent advance payments for 2,031 Ghanaians in 2025, bringing the total number of beneficiaries since the programme’s inception in 2023 to 4,732.

The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, disclosed on Wednesday that the scheme has recorded a 99% disbursement recovery rate, demonstrating the sustainability of the government’s seed money and its continued circulation.

“I am glad to state that so far, the disbursement recovery rate is about 99%, indicating that the government’s seed money is fully recoverable and in circulation,” the Minister stated during his presentation at the Government Accountability Series.

The scheme, established as a social housing programme, aims to facilitate access to rental properties for qualifying beneficiaries by providing rent advance, addressing one of the barriers many Ghanaians face in securing accommodation.

Currently operating in six regions, Greater Accra, Bono East, Northern, Eastern, Western, and Ashanti, the programme is being piloted before expansion to other parts of the country.

Mr Adjei announced that government is poised to take necessary steps in the short to medium term to scale up operations of the scheme across all sixteen regions of the country.

The Minister noted that the programme’s eligibility criteria, application process, and beneficiaries’ success stories demonstrate its effectiveness in addressing housing needs and enhancing community well-being.

The National Rental Assistance Scheme forms part of government’s response to Ghana’s housing challenges, which include a deficit currently estimated at over 1.8 million units and widespread affordability challenges that prevent many citizens, particularly low- and middle-income earners, from accessing safe and dignified housing.
