
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has officially launched the Ghana Independence Day Walk/Run nationwide campaign designed to celebrate Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary in 2027 and promote unity across the country
This event which took place on Friday in Accra, is a key step toward fulfilling President Mahama’s vision of engaging communities through sports and recreation, fostering national unity, and highlighting Ghana’s rich cultural heritage on the international stage.
In a special ceremony, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama will officiate the start of the walk/run, symbolizing patriotism and collective pride.
The Chief Director of the sports Ministry, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah said “This is a powerful movement to foster community engagement, promote healthy lifestyles, and strengthen the bonds that unite us as Ghanaians.”
She said the initiative will be rolled out across all 16 regions, aiming to inspire pride, patriotism, and camaraderie among Ghanaians of all ages and backgrounds.
She noted that the Independence Walk/ Run Day is led by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation in partnership with Millennium Marathon Sports Limited, a globally recognized organizer of mass participation events, noting that the event will feature simultaneous 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer runs and walks.
The Chief Director urged corporate and community stakeholders to support the initiative through sponsorship and active participation, emphasizing that widespread backing would reinforce the event’s role in fostering national cohesion.
The launch was attended by notable figures, including representatives from the National Sports Authority, and corporate partners such as MTN Ghana, Hisense Ghana, KGL Group, Twellium Industrial Limited, as well as supporters from the Ghana Supporters Union.
