Government Strengthens Fisheries Enforcement with New Operational Vehicles

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Emelia Arthur, has urged personnel of the Fisheries Enforcement Unit (FEU) not to be intimidated in the discharge of their duties as the government intensifies efforts to curb illegal fishing activities across the country.

Speaking during the handover of vehicles and operational resources to the FEU in Accra, she noted the need for officers to remain professional, committed and firm in carrying out enforcement operations aimed at protecting Ghana’s marine and inland water resources.

Madam Arthur said the additional logistics would enhance monitoring, surveillance and compliance efforts at a time when illegal fishing practices continue to threaten fish stocks and the livelihoods of fishing communities.

She reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to sustainable fisheries management and ensuring that all operators within the sector comply with the laws and regulations governing fisheries activities in Ghana.

According to the Minister, strengthening enforcement remains an important part of efforts to safeguard the country’s fisheries resources for future generations while supporting the long-term development of the sector.

As part of the support package, the Minister officially assigned three vehicles to the FEU to strengthen enforcement operations across Ghana’s inland and marine fisheries sectors. The vehicles include a white King Long Kingo minivan and two Toyota Hilux pickup trucks.

The vehicles were received by Commodore Faustina Anokye Boakye, Coordinator of the Fisheries Enforcement Unit, on behalf of the Unit.

The Fisheries Enforcement Unit is responsible for combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing through regular monitoring, inspections and enforcement operations in coastal and inland fishing communities across the country.
