The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Emelia Arthur, has announced plans for the construction of a fishing harbour and a modern fish market in Shama to improve livelihoods and create more opportunities for women in the fisheries sector.
She announced this on Friday at a community dialogue organised by the Ministry in partnership with the Fisheries Commission and the Global Fisheries Resilience Action in Shama.
She stated that feasibility studies were currently underway for the proposed Shama Fishing Harbour.
She said the project, championed by the President, was expected to support economic activities and improve conditions for fishing communities in the area.
The Minister also disclosed plans to establish a modern fish market in Shama to provide a better working environment for women engaged in fish roasting, frying and trading.
According to her, the project would create employment opportunities and help strengthen the local fisheries economy.
Madam Arthur assured fish processors that the Ministry was introducing measures to improve fish processing methods in order to protect public health and support livelihoods.
She noted that improving fish handling and processing practices would help reduce health risks while ensuring the quality of fish products on the market.
The Shama District Chief Executive, Mr Paul Otis Dentu, encouraged greater training and inclusion of women in the sector to help improve fish quality standards.
The Western Regional Director of the Fisheries Commission, Mr Charles Teye, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to supporting fishing communities in Shama and beyond.
The dialogue brought together women fish processors, traders, government agencies and development partners to discuss challenges and opportunities within the fisheries sector.
