Government Approves Payment of Gratuity Arrears for Retired Military Personnel

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced that the government has approved the payment of gratuity arrears for all retired military personnel under the implementation of Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.

According to a statement issued by the GAF on Wednesday, the current Military High Command, upon assumption of office, initiated engagements with the Ministries of Finance and Defence to resolve the five-year impasse over the gratuity formula.

“These consultations have now resulted in a clear two-year phased implementation roadmap,” the statement read.

The GAF indicated that personnel who retired from November 2020 will receive arrears based on the new formula, with payments scheduled in four instalments between February 2026 and December 2027.

“The first tranche is expected to be released by the close of business on Friday, 27 February 2026. In total, 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers will benefit from the payments,” the statement added.

The GAF further noted that all future retirements will be processed fully in line with CI 129, ensuring personnel receive their full entitlements at the correct rate.

This development brings closure to a matter that had remained unresolved since 2020 and guarantees fairness for affected personnel.

“The Military High Command expresses appreciation to the Government for supporting this resolution,” it concluded.
