Foreign Affairs Minister Holds Talks with Zelenskyy in Ukraine Over Release of Detained Ghanaians

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Ukraine for discussions focused on Ghana’s appeal on humanitarian grounds for the release of two citizens being held as prisoners of war in the country.

The Minister was hosted by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday, where fruitful discussions were held on Ghana’s appeal on humanitarian grounds.

“Our bilateral talks explored how our two countries can effectively combat the threat posed by trafficking networks that lure vulnerable, unsuspecting youth from Africa only to end up risking their lives in the ongoing war,” he said.

The Minister expressed optimism about the outcome of the negotiations and conveyed the appreciation of President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for safeguarding the rights of the detained Ghanaian citizens in line with international law.

“We further agreed to deepen our relations with strategic interventions outlined in agriculture, defence, education and trade,” he noted.

He said President Zelenskyy has extended a formal invitation to President Mahama as Kyiv seeks to elevate its diplomatic ties with Accra.
