President John Dramani Mahama has approved the immediate evacuation of 300 Ghanaians living in South Africa following a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of the country.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced in a social media post that the evacuees are among Ghanaians who responded to an earlier advisory by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria for support and possible evacuation.
“The Government of Ghana shall continue to safeguard the welfare of all Ghanaians, home and abroad,” he added.
The latest attacks in South Africa have renewed concerns across the African continent over the recurring targeting of foreign nationals, including traders, workers and migrants from other African countries.
Several businesses owned by foreigners have reportedly been looted, while some victims have been forced to flee their homes and workplaces.
The evacuation announcement has sparked reactions among families of affected Ghanaians, with many expressing relief after days of uncertainty and fear.
