Ghana and Austria have renewed their commitment to deepen diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties, as well as to enhance collaboration on regional and global issues within multilateral institutions.
The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr James Gyakye Quayson, disclosed this at a Ghana-Austria Political consultation on Thursday in Accra.
He said the long-standing relationship between the Republic of Ghana and the Republic of Austria has been built on mutual respect, solidarity and shared interest in peace and sustainable development.
The Deputy Minister commended Austria’s role in promoting international dialogue, particularly through institutions based in Vienna, noting that Austria’s approach aligns with Ghana’s foreign policy principles of peaceful coexistence, respect for international law and global cooperation.
He also congratulated Austria on the recent opening of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Accra, describing it as an important addition to the bilateral framework.
According to him, the Forum will serve as a platform for artistic exchange, academic collaboration and intellectual dialogue, especially in culture, education and the creative arts.
Mr Quayson said the consultations provide both sides with a formal platform to assess the outcomes of cooperation, including Memoranda of Understanding signed in September 2024.
He pointed to development projects financed through Austrian concessional loans, such as the upgrading of key highway infrastructure and water supply systems in beneficiary communities.
“These projects have improved connectivity and enhanced water access for many communities; they reflect Austria’s continued support for Ghana’s development”, he noted.
The Deputy Minister assured the Austrian that the Government of Ghana would be engaging relevant stakeholders to resolve outstanding issues transparently, adding that the partnership remains strong and focused on delivering results for both countries.
The State Secretary, Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, Josef Franz Schellhorn, noted Austria’s commitment to practical and institutional collaboration, particularly in peacebuilding.
He highlighted ongoing cooperation with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre to build capacity in conflict prevention, mediation, and security sector reform.
“Our partnership rests on shared values, mutual respect, and a common vision for stability, prosperity, and dialogue,” he said.
He called for building on the existing partnership by enhancing security collaboration, expanding economic engagement, and reinforcing cultural ties, affirming that Austria remains a steadfast and dependable partner to Ghana.
