The Council of State has congratulated President John Dramani Mahama following the passage of the United Nations General Assembly resolution on slavery and its enduring consequence.
The statement, signed by the Chairman of the Council of State on behalf of all its members and dated Friday, described the achievement as a milestone that would strengthen Ghana’s role in promoting equity and justice worldwide.
The Council said the achievement at the UN General Assembly reflected President Mahama’s diplomatic acumen and commitment to justice, human dignity and historical accountability, and that it further reinforced Ghana’s longstanding reputation as a principled voice in the community of nations.
“We are confident that this milestone will continue to inspire national pride and strengthen Ghana’s role in promoting equity and justice worldwide,” the statement read.
The congratulatory message comes a day after the resolution, presented jointly by Ghana on behalf of the African Union and CARICOM, passed at the United Nations General Assembly with 123 votes, formally placing the transatlantic slave trade on record as a crime against humanity for the first time on the world’s highest diplomatic platform.
President Mahama, who is in Philadelphia at the time of the Council’s statement for a dialogue with the Ghanaian community in the United States, had described the vote as a victory not only for Africans and people of African descent but for all people of good conscience around the world.
