Chief of Defence Staff Pledges to Resolve Military Housing Deficit

The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has pledged his commitment to tackling the accommodation deficit within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the National Investment Bank (NIB) headquarters in Accra, Lt. Gen. Agyapong described the housing shortfall as one of the most pressing challenges he identified upon assuming office.

He stated, “I pledged to work with the government to minimise, if not completely resolve, the housing challenge.”

He commended the bank’s leadership for its growth trajectory and called on well-meaning stakeholders to support his vision of building decent accommodation for GAF personnel.

Welcoming the CDS, NIB’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Dr Doliwura Zakaria, praised the Armed Forces for their discipline and patriotism, describing GAF as one of Ghana’s most respected institutions.

The National Investment Bank (NIB) donated one million cedis to the GAF to support its self-help barracks redevelopment project, acknowledging GAF’s loyalty during the bank’s own challenging periods.

Dr Zakaria commended the Military High Command for embarking on what he called a “bold and visionary” housing project, noting that providing quality accommodation for personnel is not just a welfare matter, but a strategic necessity for operational readiness and national security.

Beyond the financial donation, NIB offered to host the project’s account and proposed the establishment of a new branch in Burma Camp to improve accessibility for service personnel.

The CEO also briefed the CDS on the bank’s return to profitability and outlined plans for a share floatation, suggesting that GAF could participate as shareholders, potentially deepening the partnership to include board-level representation.
