The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has donated GH¢5 million and five Toyota Hilux pickups to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to help strengthen the government’s fight against illegal mining.
Speaking at the brief ceremony on Monday in Accra, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), hailed the donation as a testament to the Gold Board’s commitment to sustainable and responsible mining.
He stated that the move demonstrates Goldbod’s vested interest not only in gold trading but also in ensuring that Ghana’s resources are extracted in a manner that protects forests, rivers, and livelihoods.
“This collaboration proves that Goldbod is serious about responsible sourcing. We are working with multiple ministries and agencies to track excavators, prosecute offenders, and restore devastated lands,” he added.
Mr. Buah revealed that over 5,500 hectares of forest land have already been degraded by illegal activities, adding that the government has invested heavily in reclamation efforts.
He reassured the public that the government is not against mining but is committed to ensuring every ounce of gold extracted in Ghana can be traced to a responsible and legal source.
“Together, we will turn our waters blue, our forests green, and ensure that Ghana benefits fully from its mineral wealth,” he said.
On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, explained that the donation aligns with the institution’s mandate to safeguard the country’s natural resources while supporting national development.
“Yes, we want gold, but we want gold that is mined and sourced responsibly. This enhances the nation’s reputation, preserves our environment, and protects future generations”, he noted.
Mr. Sammy Gyamfi noted that while NAIMOS has been leading the charge against illegal mining in collaboration with security agencies, it requires more resources to consolidate its gains.
Mr. Gyamfi further stated that the GoldBod is committed to supporting individuals who want to engage in legal and responsible mining, but will assist NAIMOS in taking strict action against those who are determined to participate in illegal and irresponsible mining.
