President Mahama Cuts Sod for Green City Housing Project

President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the Green City Housing Project at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region, breaking ground on a development that will deliver more than 1,000 housing units on 200 acres of land.

In his address at the ceremony, President Mahama said the project was a new phase in Ghana’s housing journey and adding that the decision to site it in the Ashanti Region was both symbolic and fitting, given the kingdom’s place at the heart of Ghana’s cultural and economic life.

He expressed gratitude to Otumfuo for making the land available, stating that the gesture was a demonstration of the Asantehene’s commitment to his people’s welfare.

The project, being developed by the State Housing Company, is designed as an integrated community that combines modern design with environmental sustainability.

Beyond the housing units themselves, the development is expected to create jobs, stimulate local enterprise, and generate economic opportunity across the Bosomtwe District.

President Mahama said the project was one part of a broader government housing agenda driven by an urgent reality.

Ghana’s housing deficit has grown to over 1.5 million units, with more than half the population already living in urban areas and projections suggesting that figure could climb to 70 percent by 2050.

He warned that without urgent and large-scale action, tomorrow’s housing crisis would far exceed what the country is experiencing today.

“A nation that is seeking development must house its people with dignity,” he said.

The President also announced that government would absorb the cost of all roads, drains, and gutters within the estate under the Big Push programme, directing the Roads Minister to take up the infrastructure costs so they would not be passed on to homebuyers and inflate the price of the units.

He commended the leadership and staff of the State Housing Company for reviving the institution, describing it as Ghana’s largest single provider of housing since independence.

He said he looked forward to returning to the site next year to commission phase one of the project.
