Ghana has officially been admitted into the International Transport Forum (ITF), marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen and modernise its transport sector.
Speaking at the Council of Ministers of Transport (CMT) Meeting in Leipzig, Germany, the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, described Ghana’s membership in the ITF as a proud and important moment for the country.
According to the Minister, Ghana’s admission into the global transport body reflects international confidence in the country’s commitment to developing a transport system that is modern, safe, inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.
Mr Nikpe noted that membership in the ITF offers Ghana the opportunity to deepen collaboration with global transport leaders, exchange ideas, and learn from international best practices, while contributing to discussions that shape the future of transportation worldwide.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming the transport sector through major reforms and investments to improve connectivity and mobility nationwide.
The Minister said the government would continue to prioritise the modernisation of ports and maritime services, revitalise rail transport, expand aviation opportunities and improve road infrastructure.
He added that efforts are also being directed towards integrating all modes of transport to enhance trade, mobility, and regional connectivity.
“Transport is not just about movement. It is about economic growth, trade, social inclusion, job creation, and connecting people to opportunity,” he stated.
Mr Nikpe assured members of the forum that Ghana is prepared to play an active and dependable role within the International Transport Forum and collaborate with partner countries in promoting safer, smarter, and more sustainable transport systems.
He further expressed appreciation to the Council of Ministers and the International Transport Forum for the confidence reposed in Ghana.
The Minister also commended government officials, diplomats, and technical teams whose efforts contributed to securing Ghana’s membership in the organisation.
