Fisheries Minister Orders Reforms at Fujian Farms and Sets a Compliance Deadline

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mrs Emelia Arthur, has ordered immediate reforms at Fujian Farms following an inspection that uncovered breaches in operational, environmental, and safety standards.

The inspection, conducted on Wednesday, formed part of a routine monitoring exercise by the Ministry, aimed at strengthening compliance across aquaculture facilities.

The Minister was joined by the Asuogyaman District Chief Executive, Godwin Bobobee, along with officials from the Fisheries Commission. The visit also covered Tropo Farms.

At Fujian Farms, officials reported several violations, including the absence of basic biosecurity measures, poor sanitation, and weak waste management systems. They said the lapses pose risks to public health, the environment, and the sustainability of fish production.

Inspectors also observed workers without protective gear, unhygienic fish handling practices, erosion affecting the broodstock area, declining water quality, and unsafe disposal of dead fish.

The minister gave the facility four weeks to comply with the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146), and the Fisheries Regulations, 2010 (L.I. 1968). She warned that failure to meet the requirements would lead to closure.

She directed Fujian Farms to submit a corrective action plan within three days and to halt stocking new fingerlings until the issues are resolved.

“A ten-member task force has been deployed to supervise operations and enforce compliance. The facility has also been fined GHS240,000,” she added.

On the other hand, the minister lauded Tropo Farms for maintaining high standards. She spoke highly of its structured operations, effective biosecurity systems, and contribution to food production and jobs.

The Minister noted that the inspections would continue nationwide as the ministry works to enforce standards, protect the environment, and support sustainable aquaculture.
