Onion Trade Impasse Resolved After Ghana, Nigeria and Niger Talks

Ghana, Nigeria and Niger have resolved a cross-border onion trade dispute after a stakeholder meeting negotiated by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry.

The meeting held on Tuesday brought together onion associations from Ghana alongside representatives from Nigeria and Niger.

This meeting is to address a standoff that has left Nigerian trucks stranded in Ghana, unable to offload cargo.

Ghanaian onion associations agreed to release the held trucks with a commitment to reciprocal action by their Nigerian counterparts

Nigeria’s High Commission in Accra pledged immediate action to free Ghana-bound vehicles in return.

Both sides pledge commitment to a roadmap to prevent future blockages, anchored in existing regional trade frameworks and improving livelihoods within the sector.

The resolution signals a renewed commitment among the three nations to protect a vital agricultural corridor that sustains traders and farmers on both sides of the border.
