The Minister for Works and Housing, Mr. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has inspected the progress of drainage infrastructure currently under construction in several flood hotspots within the capital, Accra.
This initiative is part of the ministry’s mandate to improve drainage systems in flood-prone areas across the country.
During his inspection, Mr. Adjei visited the construction site of the Kaneshie Drain Channel, which includes the reconstruction of the South Kaneshie Bridge (Lot 1 and Lot 2) noting that these high-volume drainage channels, located along the Accra Academy-First Light-Kaneshie stretch and terminating into the Odaw River, will alleviate flooding for residents and commuters during heavy rainfall.
“The Weija SSC concrete drain is another high-volume drainage project that has recently commenced, aimed at drastically mitigating flooding in that area. Work is expected to be completed in 2026,” he added.
The Minister highlighted that investments in drainage infrastructure are crucial for preventing flooding and minimizing damage to livelihood hence the government’s efforts needed be complemented.
Additionally he said the public needed to practice proper waste disposal behaviors to ensure the effectiveness of these initiatives.
