R/C JHS STUDENTS IN KUKURANTUMI EDUCATED ON RTI ACT THROUGH COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The Right to Information (RTI) Officer for the Abuakwa North Municipal Assembly has intensified public education on the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989) through a sensitization programme for staff and students of R/C Junior High School in Kukurantumi. The engagement, held on 15th April, 2026, formed part of ongoing efforts to promote awareness of the RTI Law and encourage greater citizen participation in governance through access to information.

Addressing participants in both English and Twi, the RTI Officer explained the history and overview of the Right to Information Act and highlighted its importance in promoting transparency, accountability, and openness in public institutions. The session also focused on the procedures for requesting public records, the types of information available within public institutions, and the timelines within which institutions are expected to respond to information requests under the law.

The sensitization programme attracted 189 participants, comprising 65 males and 124 females, including teachers and students of the school. Participants were educated on fees and charges associated with information requests, with emphasis on exemptions available to indigent individuals, persons with disabilities, and persons identified as poor. The interactive engagement allowed students and teachers to ask questions and gain practical understanding of how the law can be applied in everyday life and future academic research.

Teachers expressed appreciation for the initiative and appealed for more regular engagements to keep students informed about government policies and new initiatives. Students also showed keen interest in the law and indicated their willingness to educate their parents and communities about their right to access information. The programme ended successfully with participants expressing satisfaction with the session, further highlighting the critical role of Information Officers in promoting community awareness and strengthening open governance through public education.
